Painter specializes in the fine art of avoidance
By Wynter Holden
Ever been to one of those upscale art exhibits where you look at a Pollock-style splatter painting and think to yourself, “I coulda done that in, like, five minutes?”, but you’re too afraid to say it lest the throng of wine-sipping art snobs blacklists you forever?
Artist Randy Slack offers relief from that sort of worry with his annual “Chaos Theory” exhibit, which invites local artists to create and submit new works just days – even minutes! – before the opening. “I will be painting [my piece] as it rests on the gallery wall, probably hours before the show,” says Slack. “That’s how I know when to stop on a painting: when the opening begins.”
Enjoy free grub and wine, DJ spins, a performance by cellist Jenifer Ben, and hot-off-the-presses art at the “Chaos Theory 9” opening reception. This year’s lineup includes original Chaos Theorists Jeff Falk, Steve Gompf, and James Angel, along with new faces like Claudio Dicochea and Chris Santa Maria.
